dc.description.abstract | The series of artworks titled “Crossing Human Threshold” is an inquiry into the imbalance between one’s self-identity and that of others. These works are rooted in the questions surrounding “identity,” in a departure from subjective experience to reflect the identity of the individual as it relates to family, marriage, society, and culture. Joined to the creative process is the ritual of self-examination, involving a chaotic exploration of self-identity, a scrutiny of one’s relationship with the others, and a resistance against the traditions of culture. These works encompass the confines of conflicts of identity in the transformation of subjectively internalized limitations of identity into a creation of immediately visible perceptibility. The series “Crossing Human Threshold” includes four pieces: (1) “Human Threshold 01” is a dialogue about the lost identity of the female body, and an attempt to eliminate its control over oneself. ; (2) “Human Threshold 02” expresses the imbalance of love between parents and children, which dominates and demands retribution in the name of expectation and sacrifice; (3) “Human Threshold 03” combines the contradictory elements of gender stereotypes seeking to inspire a chain reaction in the minds of viewers, with an invitation to out of one’s comfort zone as regards to gender. (4) “Human Threshold 04” describes how two individuals with their own values step into a marriage and experience a series of emotions and conditions such as exploration and control. The four works adopt the images of instruments of torture as the basis of format development; and the concept of restraint from identity conflicts is delivered after the transformation. This creative process is an inquiry into self-identity, as well as a starting point to surmount one’s limits and expand the circle of the self. In experiencing these works, the artist and viewers explore the borders between one’s self-identity and that of others, pushing outward the boundaries of the individual, expanding internal space and increasing external capacity.
