By applying photography, the work "Crossing", intends to record the moving track of things by continually shooting photos of the passing landscapes through the windows on moving vehicles. The author aims to represent the main concept "Life is a continuous moving progress" through capturing the traces and partial impression of the ever-moving landscapes. These images are also designed as one-way tickets that bring passengers to some future and unknown destinations. The concept is to correspond these photos and make the work as a way to intervene audience’s real life. In addition, the slide show demonstrating the huge amount of photos via a LCD photo frame intends to recollect and retrospect the shooting process. Alongside the digital photo frame, two additional photos of the author’s own reflection during his travels are placed in a way to imply the existence of the author himself. Through interpreting "Crossing", the thesis reviews the author’s background, traveling experience, thoughts of learning and creating works as well as life in the graduate school - all possible factors that may have influenced the work. The motive of taking these photos originates from a desire to explore the nature of art making. The randomness of images, however, is at the same time casting doubts on the possibility of these photos to become a coherent art work. Moreover, the randomness of the shooting design reflects the author's lack of confidence, but on the other hand, this randomness incidentally matches what life is always like. To the author, these photos integrate the thoughts and the process of creating the work in the form of a photo diary. After the work is done and the thesis finished, things will continuously evolve just like what this work tries to reveal to the audience. |
