Abstract Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto in E-flat major was composed in 1959, a period of thaw just after the death of Stalin, when cultural life was slowly getting out of government control. However, from the key setting, the orchestration, the structure of this piece, we can still be affected by the veiled music language consistently used by Shostakovich in his works within the classical form. For examples, the strong rhythm reflects the shadow of war, the solo cello’s harmonic creates a bleak sound, dissonant intervals depicts piercing coldness, and the solo cello and orchestra shows the appearance of a comic march. In addition, Shostakovich was living in a communist society under totalitarian rule, but still used his personal monogram as motif in this concerto. Solo cello, french horn, glockenspiel and timpani, sometimes compete with each other, sometimes converse with each other, reflecting the composer's troubled desire for subjectivity and interpersonal relations.
