Abstract

This study investigates the determinants of innovation using data on American firms. Various possible determinants are investigated, including employee ownership, R&D intensity and company growth. Two measures of innovation containing patents and intangible assets are proposed. Multiple regression analysis for panel data is conducted for the full sample of businesses, chemical firms, as well as for sub-samples of firm with different proportion of employee ownership. The result indicates that employee ownership has significant and positive effect on innovation regardless the proportion of employee ownership and industry when innovation is measured by patents. For other variables, the results are inconsistent with different measure of innovation.
