In this thesis a novel optical multi-fanouts is proposed as an application to optical interconnect. Optical interconnect can be applied in high speed parallel-processing and both interchip and intrachip in multichhips modules(MCM). It can not only solve some inherent problems in electronic interconnection such as heat dissipation and propagation delay but also increase connect density and channel bandwidth. A set of holograms which are used to beamsplit and redirect simultaneously can be applied to optical interconnect. A novel multi-fanouts element implemented by cascaded structure of substrate-mode holograms( SHMs) with dichromated gelatin(DCG) is presented. DCG, the material whose characteristics is very close to ideal phase holographic recording material, possesses the advantages like high diffraction efficiency, high signal- to-noise ratio and high opical quality. This multi-fanouts element also inherit the characteristics of substrate-mode holograms -- easy-to- aligh due to the fan-in and fan-outs are all perpendicular to the surface of holograms. All experiments are performed with 441.6nm (He-Cd laser). The diffraction efficiency of the volume gratings recorded in self-made DCG can even approach above 90%. The imaging mechanism, fabrication and processing procesures of DCG are also proposed in the thesis.
