The main purposes of this study are to propose an adaptive on-
line survey system which can be used in the PC-based, Chinese
computer networks environment, and to investigate the
feasibility of the system. This study first discusses the
evolution and the forms of the computer assisted survey,
including Disk-by Mail (DBM), Computer Assisted Telephone
Interviewing (CATI) and Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing
(CAPI), and then investigates the forms of network survey,
including E-Mail, Newsgroup, Bulletin-Board System (BBS) and
World-Wide Web (WWW). This study also compares the advantages
and disadvantages of these forms. Finally, this study proposes
the adaptive questionnaire as a new method for the on-line
survey research. The adaptive on-line survey system was developed
on the World-Wide Web server and used Visual Basic programming
language to develop the "question bank" and "linkage function"
for the Common Gateway Interface (CGI). Webpage design followed
the design guidelines reviewed from the related literature. The
evaluation for the system adopted the usability engineering
methods of thinkaloud and questionnaire, in both expert and real
user approaches. The system was evaluated in terms of its user
interface design, programming techniques and user attitudes. The
evaluation results indicated that both experts and users thought
the system was feasible, acceptable, and demonstrated positive
attitudes toward the use of the system.
