The purpose of this study is to integrate the characteristics of constructivisticlearning, instructuinal computer game, and MUD to develop a constructivism orientedlearning environment. The focus is on the implication of game attribute on aconstructivism learning environment. The study first discusses the essence of constructivistic learning and the role ofgame in a learning environment. It then argues that MUD is appropriate for building ainstructional gaming, constructivistic learning environment. In this study, the designguildlines for a gaming constructivistic learning environment were concluded, and aMUD learning environment prototype was established accordingly. A formativeevaluation of this protype was also conducted. The prototype evaluation indicated that:1. Game attribute embedded in a MUDlearning environment could motivate the learner to learn actively. 2. The gameexperience in a MUD learning environment was the exploration process ofconstructivistic learning. 3. Social interaction was necessary in a constructivisticlearning course. 4. Cooperative behaviors had positive and negative implications to thelearners' performance. 5. Appropriate metaphors could help learners recall theirplaying/learning experience. 6. The novice and experienced players of MUD differedevidently in their exploration performance. 7.MUD is appropriate for constructing an"edutainment" environment. |
