This thesis presents the design and implementation of a multifunctional battery charging control experimental system. This system consists of five major parts: a PC-based system monitoring program, a DSP control board, a power stage, the battery, and a resistive load network. The core of this battery experimental system is a DSP controlled programmable power source for programmed voltage or current waveform generation. We have developed DSP control algorithms for voltage and current regulation, in combination with a power stage developed by the laboratory, we have constructed a programmable power source for battery charging and discharging control. The designed battery experimental system provides various functions for battery charging and discharging control, such as various charging mode control, battery voltage measuring and recording, battery capacity estimation and calculation, charging profile control, and the log files can be used for further battery characteristics analysis. This thesis presents the design and integration of the proposed battery charging experimental system. Modular design methodology has been adopted in the design of the system. With its flexible extension capability, the designed system can be used to develop intelligent battery charging algorithms in the future. |
