More than ten million motorcycles run on the streets every day in Taiwan. Motorcycles have been the most important vehicles and significantly contributed to Taiwan's economic development for more than three decades. However, the rapid increase of motorcycles has also brought a lot of problems to the society, which include parking problem, traffic safety problem as well as environmental pollution problem. But a problem hardly ever to study is motorcycle-theft. There are average 518 motorcycles being stolen every day. A significant proportion of the motorcycle users have experienced losing their motorcycles. This study is undertaken to explore the factors affecting motorcycle-theft. Face-to-face interviews with motorcycle users were conducted to collect motorcyclists' parking behavior and experience of losing their motorcycles. Survival analysis method is then used to formulate the lifetime (the time to keep the motorcycle) as a function of motorcycles' characteristics and motorcyclists' behavior. The study results show that age of motorcycles, location and time of parking, motorcyclists' attitude and behavior are the significant factors to determine the risks of their motorcycles to be stolen. The results of this study not only explore the factors affecting the risk of losing motorcycles, but also provide a set of valuable information to draw the strategies to fight with motorcycle-theft.
