dc.description.abstractComputer system innovations have been able to take the often tedious legal firm tasks of time recording and billing from the pencil and typewriter to easier, automated systems. The marketing of law firms has moved from little to no marketing to an era of television commercials, print ads, and, with the advent of the Internet, interactive Web sites and blogs. On the office management side, high-tech innovations have now ushered in an era where time records are no longer handwritten, and invoices can be automatically filled and sent. The drawback, however, is that e-billing and time record software can be expensive to set up, run and maintain, and often require extensive installation and training time. Staff intranet systems might not be as effective in a law firm setting as they are in, for example, a software company. Additionally, marketing via blogs carries on a whole new set of legal and professional problems. This proposed thesis aims to show the advantages and potential drawbacks of blogs and Web 2.0 systems as a viable part of the law firm practice, from office administration, billing work, as well as marketing and human resources. It will also address some of the security issues a law firm, a sector where business privacy is of the utmost concern, would have when using blogs and Web 2.0, and the issues in setting up systems and training employees. Additionally, since this research is based in Taiwan, using Taiwanese law firms, peculiarities such as the automation of time record corrections will be addressed. My hope with this project is to investigate and help form a new prototype using Web logs and Web 2.0, and explain the strengths and weaknesses of these two electronic tools.en_US
