This book examines Taiwanese democracy from different angles and through ethnography of social movements –their promises, struggles, agendas, and obstacles. It is about testimonies voiced from the world of what were often called social movement groups and local collectives and made by their participants to respond to, re-evaluate, and resolve around the 「democracy」 era. A democratic life was seen in this book as processes in which the questions of self-exploration, self-evaluation, and self-realization on the part of its individual citizens were constantly posed in reference to ever shifting axes of values and meanings. By studying protests, social movement organizations and individual experiences, the book documents various moments of collective action as a result of long-term social struggle for liberty, citizenship, and historicity in the processes of the national search for democracy. The book mainly focuses on urban social movement organizations and neighborhood associations which began to emerge to the public space in the 1980s and flourished in the 1990s, situating them within a culture of protest in the making. Ranging from loosely-knit collective protests to well-structured organizations, these grassroots actions envisioned the change of society in terms of a variety of socio-cultural imaginations –some utopian, while others firmly grounded in either political and economic analyses or cultural criticism.
