Synthesis of quaternary chalcogenides has been an area of intense research. In this project, we use the pseudo ternary system as an approach to synthesize new multinary chamcogenides with new structure type and enhancements in physical properties. The target solid state systems include: 1) T1-T2-M-X and 2) A-T-M-X (A = alkaline earth, rare earth element; T = transition metals; M = group 13-15 elements; X = group 16 elements(S、Se、Te)). Reactions of Elements, binary chalcogenides, such as AaXb (A = alkaline earth/rare earth element), TaXb ( T = transition metals; X = S, Se, Te) and MaXb (M = group 13-15 element), and other ternary chalcogenide phases are used as precursors to perform solid state reactions, and the effect of composition, site preference to their physical properties will be investigated. Products will be characterized by single/powder crystal x-ray diffraction, thermoanalyses (TG/DTA), electron microscopy (SEM/TEM, EDS), electrical/thermal conductivity, UV-VIS-NIR diffuse reflectance, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The preparation and characterization of new chalcogenide compounds would provide valuable information about new energy materials. |
