By comparing the same space at different times, Tonnies found that the social community relationship is formed based on common interests, including friendship, beliefs, values and groups of the same trade. Based on folklore religions, this study investigated the formation and integration of the social community relationship of two different regions in Tunglo Township, within the same timeframe, and compared the integration process of the geographic environment, exploitation and religious beliefs of the two regions, so as to better understand Tongluo Township in terms of its social dimension. At the same time, the study also conducted a field survey using qualitative research methods (participation and observation) and in-depth interviews to record the development context of the religions in the communities. The study examined the social meaning of religious rituals according to Emile Durkheim’s social point of view, and used the sacrificial scope defined by a Japanese scholar, Ken Okada, to determine the size of a social community. At the same time, the study also referred to the research conducted by Mei-Jung Lin and Hsun Chang to broaden its religious vision, and used the symbolic meaning of social community developed by Hsiu-Hsing Lin as an orientation. Starting from the geographical position of Tunglo Township, the study probed the river basin’s geographic environment, exploitation history and religious organizations to further understand how the two different regions could develop their own distinctive cultures. On the other hand, the field survey found that, after community formation, community integration will never stop, because collective intention may appear with the presence of a symbolic icon. The symbolic icon of the social communities in Tunglo Township is Goddess Mazu.
