摘要: In order to reduce increasing energy consumption of Web servers, this study proposes the Solar Energy-based Embedded Distributed Server farm (SEEDS), which utilizes solar-powered embedded devices and peer-to-peer (P2P) technologies to construct an energy-efficient server farm with high reliability and availability. These embedded devices distributed over the Earth are organized into a P2P service network to act as the front-end cooperative cache system for Web servers. Web data can be accessed through the SEEDS network most of the time without going through the servers. We consider the characteristics of embedded system and solar energy to design an optimal approach to connect distributed cache resources together to provide a reliable Web cache system. Simulation results and a prototype system show that SEEDS could reduce overall energy consumption in Web servers by 50% in average.
