Smart meter is an emerging appliance which can be used to collect and monitor devices’ power consumption usage data. Users can monitor devices’ usage conditions in order to adjust device operations for energy saving. To avoid the power wasting problem, it is an important issue to set a power usage constraint to effectively monitor and control users’ power consumption usages within a restricted power usage range. However, existing researches on smart-metering systems do not address such issue. Moreover, the existing smart-metering systems only derive the statistical information of device usages, rather than conduct further analysis on users’ device usage records for effective allocation and utilization of power usage resources. In this study, a novel Intelligent Energy Saving (IES) system is proposed to effectively monitor and utilize the power usages of devices under the power consumption constraint. The IES system conducts context-based mining to discover device usage patterns in certain context from historical device usage records. Based on the context-based device usage patterns, the system will allocate required power usages to possible device operations in advance. The IES system uses smart-meters to dynamically monitor the power consumption usages of devices and allocate power usage resources to devices. When power usage resources may be insufficient under the power consumption constraint, the IES system will adjust device operations for energy saving to increase available power usages by releasing the unused power usages of low-priority or idling devices to the system. The proposed IES system provides intelligent analysis of context-based usage behaviors, effective monitoring and utilization of power usages of devices for intelligent energy saving.
