Interactive Multimedia Theatre plays an important role in contemporary performing art. The now known earliest interactive multimedia dance theatre piece “variations V”(1950), was composed by J. Cage. Later, the “Mortal Engine” created by Chunky Move and “Apparition” by K. Obermaier, both using digital technologies, took the definition of stage performance to a whole new level. “UltraSurfing” is a multimedia interactive musical theatre piece scored for vocal, electronic music, video projection and stage installation. While browsing the Internet, there are different methods on how to search, each giving a different process. In terms of process, one of the two main points is “Personalization Searching Interface”; the other is “Social Community Group”. When people search for information that interests them on the Internet, the search engine will sort the search result automatically according to the search preference set. When searching, the Internet launches an algorithm that filters information irrelevant to the users’ preferences. The algorithm makes information searching more convenient and efficient. On the contrary, they narrow the search range and neglect unimportant information. “UltraSurfing” presents the view of efficiently searching for information and no limitation on searched results without the “Algorithmic transformation. The performance stage and the auditoria are analogous to the cyberspace of “world wide web (WWW)”; the interaction between performer and other media symbolizes the relationship of human being and Internet. “UltraSurfing” consists four parts, which introduce different processes and transformations of “web search engine” as well as the algorithmic effect on searching action. The main concept emphasizes the view of fair treatment within web search. This paper consists of 5 chapters. Chapter 1 gives the preface. Chapter 2 presents the compositional incentives, conception and background. Chapter 3 covers the compositional form and design of each section and structure, including the relationship of each medium. Chapter 4 is a detailed analysis of music, video projection and stage installation. Chapter 5 will bring this paper to a full conclusion. |
