Insert molding is widely used because it injects plastic to metal directly, simplifies the process, and enhances the bonding strength of Al alloy/polymer. Some applications start to use primer to raise the bonding strength recently, but the condition of the metal surface result in poor bonding strength. In this study the surface of aluminum alloy test pieces were treated by dielectric barrier discharge plasma system to increase adhesive bonding strength. Before plasma treatment, aluminum alloy test pieces surfaces were treated by chemical solution. It was observed that amine functional groups were presented on the surfaces. Then test pieces were treated by plasma, and the effect of the influence of plasma treatment distance, treatment times, and source gas to adhesion strength were compared. After plasma treatment, we glue the primer on the aluminum alloy surfaces, and carry out insert molding. The relation between bonding strength and functional group presented on the aluminum alloy surfaces, adhesion were investigated by shear test. Experiment results showed that polymer linking with amine functional group increase the bonding strength. Plasma treated test pieces showed better adhesion. After shear test, we found that primer enhances the bonding strength of aluminum alloys and polymers.
