A bulk molding compound, a kind of fiber reinforced unsat- ated
polyester cementitious polymer composite, consisted of
unsaturated polyester, cement, fillers, and reinforcements
which is designated as FRUP-CPC. The product can be used in
conjunction with any reinforcement to make possible the
production of engin- eering materials by casting or pressing by
cold or hot processesr and with strength far superior to normal
concrete ortics. It is found that the mechanical properties of
this fiberinforced polyester/cement composite depend on glass
or wood fiber content, amount of cement, kinds and amount of
filler used as well as the pressure in compression molding
process. The composite in conjunction with glass fiber under
apprepriate formulation, its flexural strength will be improved
about 70% stronger comparing with matrix without fiber. The
composite developed by using casting method can attain a high
compressive strength of over 100MPa, which is more than 5 times
stronger than normal concrete. This higher bonding force is due
to the chemically bonding reaction between cement andsaturated
polyester. From kinetic analysis, it is found that cement can
accelerate polymerization reaction rate of unsaturated
polyester, similar to the acceleration of curing by the
addition of alkaline earth oxide, this phenomenon is the
thickeningaction of unsaturated polyester.
