Due to the exploding growth of the size and the usage of networks, network management is becoming one of the most pressing problems in data communications. In this paper, a remote network manager based on RMON/SNMP for TCP/IP-based network is implement- ed. SNMP is an application protocol that is typically used to convey network management information between a network manager and agents/monitors. RMON, RFC-1271, is a definition of MIB objects to collect information of managed network segments. It defines standard network- monitoring functions and interfaces for communicating between an SNMP-based managers and remote monitors. The manager is implemented using Tcl/Tk language, an X-Window application development language, to provide graphic presenta- tion of the status of network traffic. It includes two major functions: (1) to configure the RMON monitor by setting the monitor's control tables and (2) to process the management information collected from monitors and to present it graphi- cally. For each function, we implement various features according to the group definition of RMON MIB. The implemented manager is shown to be very helpful for a network administrator to monitor the network segments of interest.
