The purpose of this thesis is to develop an approach to the information requirement analysis for the executive information system(EIS). It is hoped that this approach can provide those who intend to introduce EIS to their business with a more systematic procedure to which they are able to make reference. EIS developed in the '80s. There have been a great number of researches on the development methodology of EIS, but only a few academic studies have discussed the information requirement analysis for EIS. However, information requirement analysis not only plays a crucial role in the successful implementation of EIS, but also is the first step in developing the entire EIS system. Accordingly, while proposing a systematic approach to information requirement analysis, we start from the requirement acquisition. The proposed approach can be divided into three phases. In Phase I we apply a procedural method to extract the true information requirements from executives; in Phase II we adopt IDEF0, a systematic technique of setting the specification of requirements to eliminate all possible misunderstandings among developers and to construct those requirements acquired in Phase I; in the third phase, we use IDEF1X, a technique which is developed in accordance with IDEF0, to establish the logical databases of EIS as a linkage between internal and external schema. Finally, we give a case study of EIS for a chain store to detail this approach and test its feasibility. By adopting this proposed approach, applying the EIS development methodology, and establishing the EIS physical database, we develop a prototype system of EIS for that chain store. |
