In the domain of design studies, design thinking and design automation have become important directions. Therefore, the design approaching strategies in design process is interesting to the researchers. This paper is an empirical study about the relationship between design approaching strategies and design thinking activities. In this paper, we try to explore the relationship between design strategies and design thinking activities by the form-oriented and function-oriented design in architectural design. We take the protocol analysis in cognition psychology as a tool to analyze the design process of professional designer. By this empirical study, we can find several phenomenons. First, there are more interactions between examination and drawing in a form-oriented design. There are more interactions between examination and thinking in a function-oriented design. Second, the distribution of desin activities of both strategies shows the significant difference. These phenomenons reflect the different functions of seeing behaviour in design process. Finally, we try to discuss the tendency of design in different design approaching strategies and the implcations in computer-aided design.
