If a conducting material is placed in a magnetic field perpendicular to the direction of current flow a voltage is developed across the material in a direction perpendicular to both the initial current direction and the magnetic field direction. This voltage is called the Hall voltage, after E.H. Hall who first observed the effect in 1879. The Hall voltage arises from the deflection of the moving charge carriers from their normal path by the applied magnetic field.en_US
