This research is aimed to investigate the effect of calm and rock music on cardiorespiratory interactions by heart rate variability (HRV), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) behavior and cardiorespiratory synchrogram. HRV provides the information for evaluating the activity of autonomic nervous system (ANS) at different mental-stress levels. Quantification of respiratory sinus arrhythmia reflects the correlation between cardiac rhythm and respiratory pattern in each subject. Synchrogram analysis based on the R-peak phase and respiratory cycle can be used to evaluate the performance of cardiorespiratory interactions. This study included 18 healthy subjects in the age range of 20-25 years. According to our HRV results, most subjects have vigorous ANS activity and dominated parasympathetic nervous system in the calm-music session. In the RSA analysis, calm-music session induces more apparent respiratory sinus arrhythmia phenomenon than rock-music session. Pearson's correlation coefficient (PCC) method is applied to quantify cardiorespiratory interaction. Results reveal that most subjects have better cardiorespiratory synchronization in the calm-music session. Finally, the line-fitted synchrogram provides a long-term overview of the quality and performance of cardiorespiratory functioning. Results of line fitting of synchrogram reflect that the calm-music session exhibits rather sparse distribution of lines, yet, with better parallelism. It indicates the prominent cardiorespiratory synchronization.
