This thesis consists of two parts: The first part comprises the idea of the composition, the compositional style and the analysis of the work. The second part is the composition Fei Lian. Fei Lian is scored for flute, percussion and live electronic music. This composition drew inspiration from the ancient myth of Fei Lian, the chinese lord of wind. The author tries to adopt the modern technology to interprete the legend of the Fei Lian. This work is intended to express the images of the wings through the music motives and the noises generated both from the instrument and electronic device. The work represents the mutural influence and relationship between nature and culture. The statement in the thesis is divided into 5 chapters: Chapter I introduces the compositional motivation of Fei Lian. Chapter II reveals the use of creation, including the background information of composition, the way that author transforms the image of wing god into the music and the use of music technology to the composition. Chapter III explains technique of electronic music such as filtering, granular synthesis, delay, stretch ……and so on. Chapter IV presents the analysis of the composition, including the structures, forms, instrumentation, pitch materials, timber, and the methods employed for the electronic music techniques. The chapter V offers general remarks on the contributions and reflections of this thesis. |
