In the last decade, Taiwan Semiconductor industry has seen steady growth, with Integrated Circuit (IC) design being one of the key driving components of this industry. Taiwan possession of more than 270 IC design houses places it second behind only the USA in the IC design segment. Using a PEST analysis, this research discussed some of the external Trends (political, economic, social, and technological) in Taiwan within the last decade and categorized them as advantages and disadvantages that they may have on the Taiwan semiconductor industry according to the literature. Secondary data was the primary source of information for the methodology of this section of the research. Internally, the competitive advantage and positioning was evaluated using the firms’ effectiveness in patent protection. This paper uses patent information of three of the top IC design companies in signal processing technology between 2006 and 2016 in Taiwan to identify their competitive benefits and positioning in technology management and R&D activities. Based on the patent strength and patent quality of competitors (MediaTek and Novatek), Realtek can now recognize the strategic changes in their competitive environment and is now better equipped to make managerial decisions.zh_TW
