As the world has increasingly concerned about the issues of global ecology, climate change, energy security and the limited oil reserves, there has been a surging demand of clean energy such as hydrogen energy and fuel cells. Despite a relatively late start in the technology research and development of fuel cells, Taiwan has the following advantages. Firstly, the large number of medium-sized enterprises, the operation flexibility, and the ability to react quickly to the market, have made Taiwan’s mass production techniques and application capability competitive internationally. Secondly, Taiwan has a manufacturing cost advantage, which makes it advantageous in entering the downstream market. Thirdly, Taiwan has already had a solid foundation in the electronic generator, electric information, and motorcycle industries. If Taiwan better utilizes its resources and infrastructure, a value chain of this emerging industry is likely to be created. In the introduction stage of this industry, Taiwan should control the development of the key components applicable in the niche market so to transform its traditional industry into high-tech, green industry and benefit from the value addition. This is a study on qualitative analysis of the technology status, market and industry trends of hydrogen energy and fuel cell. This study focuses on the three most suitable applications of fuel cells in Taiwan: 3C products, motorcycles and HEVs with auxiliary power, and stationary electric generators. It uses SWOT analysis to analyze the competitive advantages of each of the fuel cell applications. It is hoped to be served as a future reference, to provide suggestions and strategies to the industry, and to rapidly shorten the technology gap in order to gain advantages in global competition.
